Time Travelers Costume Guild of Portland, Oregon has rounded up a group of experts to share their skills with you for a full day of costuming fun.

 

Join us, and travel back to the 19th century to see what Victorians really wore every day, even taking a peek "underneath it all". Learn how to modify commercial, fantasy and historical costume patterns for a custom fit. Learn expert makeup techniques to add polish to your historical costuming look, and make a reticule (historical handbag).

These workshops are suitable for beginners to experts, ages 16 and older. Some materials will be supplied and you will need to bring some basic sewing tools.  A complete list of what to bring will be sent via email after receiving your paid registration.

10:00 am-10:45  - Fabulous Fitting Part 1-Lecture

People come in all sorts of shapes and sizes but (as you may have noticed) patterns come in "standard" sizes...ultimately fitting no one. Plus historical patterns fit no one with a modern body. Modern Historical patterns are sometimes the best of both worlds. In this lecture we will explore the following:

1. How to correctly measure your body and select the right size pattern. 

2. Review the following: 

a. review of "modern" historical patterns and what they offer. Including a look at specialty pattern companies.

b. adjust commercial patterns to fit your measurements. 

c. discussion on actual period patterns and what need to be done to fit modern bodies.

d. discussion on period specific undergarments and altering patterns to accommodate.

e. different ways to convert patterns from a book into life-size patterns and grade to fit your size. 

Workshop Leader: Teri Halbert, plus assistants. Theresa Lee Halbert has worked as a costume designer in professional theater for over 20 years in Chicago and Los Angeles and has her MFA in Theatrical Costume Design. Currently she works in the apparel industry in a number of roles including apparel/fabric development and technical design. including projects for Nike, Adidas and Eddie Bauer. 

 

10:45 am-11:45 - Fabulous Fitting Part 2-Hands-on

We will start with getting everyone's accuate measurements and recording them for future use. Bring your corset if you want to have your measurements taken wearing it for historical garments. If you have a pattern you bought and need help to fit it for your own fabulous body, bring it! In this hands-on workshop you will have the opportunity to adjust a pattern with assistance from our able-bodied team of experts. .We will use the techniques discussed in the lecture for real-world application. Workshop Leader: Teri Halbert, plus assistants

 

11:45-12:45- Lunch
Bring a lunch or you may want visit one of the many cafes in downtown Hillsboro during the break.

 

1:00 pm - Victorian Secrets: What Our Ancestors Didn’t Show Us

Let’s take a look at the secrets that gave 19th century fashions their distinctive style and shapes. What did they wear, and why? We’ll follow a timeline through the mid- to late-nineteenth century through fashion plates, paintings, photographs and original garments. Workshop leader: Kay Demlow is a designer, dressmaker and fashion historian specializing in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As the owner of Lavenders’ Green Historic Clothing, Kay has been researching, replicating and wearing these clothes since 1991.

2:00 pm - Underneath it All: Bustles and Bloomers and Corsets, Oh My!

Throughout history, both women and men have sought to attain the ideal fiqure through the use of "enhanced" underpinnings. Learn what a lobster bustle is and what year you'd wear one! Our comely models will display a variety of underpinnings from the 18th-19th c, and we will discuss the materials and construction methods used to make these lovely items. Workshop Leaders: Kay Demlow and Kathryn Marvin. Kathryn Marvin is an ardent admirer of the bustle period aesthetic and has attempted to teach herself all she can about it. There is always much to learn, and she has been sewing for almost 10 years in her pursuit of the ultimate underpinnings.

 

3:00 pm- Historical Makeup: Finishing Touches

Learn how to take your cosplay or costuming look from ordinary to eye catching with the use of makeup. These ladies will show you three different looks.  Learn about the history and practical application of Georgian, Regency, and turn of the century cosmetics. There will be models, masterpieces, and maquillage, so don't miss this fun and informative workshop!! Workshop Leaders: Vanity Thorn is a published and award winning model, stylist and performer. She has participated in conventions across the country; including Wild Wild Westcon, Steamcon, SD ComicCon, and DragonCon. Kim Damio is the owner and creator of the artisan make-up company, Portland Black Lipstick Company.

 

4:00 pm- Make Your Own Reticule

Make a reticule (handbag) suitable for your 17th c - 21st c costumes. We will provide some silks and trimmings, or you can bring your own material to match an outfit. Bring some fabric and trimmings to share if you can! You may sew this project by hand or machine. You will need ¼ yard each of fashion fabric and lining, plus a yard and a half of narrow ribbon. Trims as desired. Bring matching thread, too. Workshop leaders: Kay Demlow and Marlys Violet Spencer.
